What 1 km of Google Maps Rank Data Shows About Bangkok Local SEO

We aggregate our public geo-grid scans into Bangkok local SEO benchmarks: how often one business holds the #1 spot across a 1-km grid, and how many businesses share the top-5. The numbers surprise most owners.

Most local SEO advice talks about 'your Google Maps rank' as if it were one number. It is not. Run the same search at 25 points across one kilometer of Bangkok and you will get several different top-3 lists.

Across our public Bangkok geo-grid scans, two numbers stand out: how consistently one business holds the #1 spot across a 1-km grid (the winner share), and how many distinct businesses share that grid's top-5. The direction differs by industry — see the live tables — but the takeaway is universal: Google Maps rank is a property of location, not just of the business.

Why one rank number misleads

Google heavily weights proximity: the searcher's coordinates change the map pack. Even where one business dominates #1, the top-5 behind it keeps reshuffling — and in the industries where winner share drops, the #1 itself flips within a few hundred meters. Any report that gives you a single rank per keyword is averaging away exactly the information you need: where you win and lose.

What we measure

Every scan in the benchmark runs 25 live Google Maps searches (5×5 grid, 1 km radius) through the official Google Places API, in English, centered on one of ten major Bangkok malls. The mall's own listing is excluded so the tables rank real competing businesses. Two numbers per scan:

  • Winner share — the share of grid points where the scan's most frequent #1 business actually holds #1. Low means rank flips constantly across the kilometer.
  • Top-5 pool — how many distinct businesses appear in any point's top 5. High means the competition is wide, not a locked-down duo.

What to do with this

  1. Stop asking 'what's my rank'. Ask where you rank — grid first, number second.
  2. Find your strong zones. The points where you hold top-3 are your real service heartland; protect them with reviews and GBP posts that name those areas.
  3. Attack the edges. Adjacent points where you drop to 8–12 are the cheapest wins: landing-page and GBP service-area signals aimed exactly there.

You can run the same scan on your own business — the free trial covers a full 5×5 grid — and every underlying Bangkok mall scan is free to browse, no signup, on the free public maps.
